Planning a trip in south India? Kodaikanal maybe? Kodai is a nice place with very scenic locations but here's the thing about kodai , it is overcrowded now a days especially during season. You could find everything you need to know about Kodaikanal in any other website but in this post you're going to know about a whole new world called Vattakanal. This is the place where you want to be. Trust me. Vattakanal is one of the most peaceful place you can be at. This place is about half an hour away from Kodaikanal bus stand. Its actually a hill right next to the all famous Kodaikanal. This place has got hardly any commercial hotels or shops. they have all the stuff you need (from toilet paper to nutella) at a slightly higher price than normal. Altaf is the name you want to remember when you get to Vattai. Altaf cafe, Altaf cottage, this altaf guy seems to own everything there. Now here is the best part of vattakanal . The cottages here are very clean and cozy with a fire place and stuff and best of all,the cottages are CHEAP.
The view from the cottages is magnificent. There is a lot of trekking and walking involved in this place. Anyone wanting to visit this place will have to be ready to walk a lot but its totally worth it. the views from every view point is breathtaking. You probably wont realise how much you walked thanks to the amount of greenery surrounding you everywhere.
Now there are hardly any cops to bother you in vattakanal.you are more or less free to do what you want. Just dont kill someone. You probably heard about the magic mushrooms scene in kodaikanal . Though its illegal its quiet easily available there. You will have random men asking you if you want any as soon as you reach the hill. If your hungry then you could just take a 2 minute walk to altafs cafe or just order in some simple food in your room.
There are some really nice places to visit in and around vattakanal. I suggest you take one taxi and stick with him throughout your stay. It would workout cheaper for you. The places you should ask your taxi guy take you is
- Berijam lake (my personal fovourite)
- pine forest-trippy as shit!
- kodaikanal lake
- view point
- dolphin nose
- ayuerveda and home made chocolate stores
